Coping with the Seasons: A Personal Approach to Change

Feeling the cooler air this morning made me realize that fall is officially here. It’s hard for me to tell sometimes because I live in a very warm climate. Who chooses to live in 110-degree weather, right? Like clockwork, I know I must take my winter clothes out of the garage and embrace the cooler seasons. As the seasons change, it’s not just the weather that shifts—our bodies and minds can feel it too. Whether you’re bracing for the heat of summer or the chill of winter, adjusting your routine can really help make the transition smoother.

It’s important to know yourself and understand your body’s needs. Recognizing how the seasons impact us is crucial for creating a routine that is manageable and sustainable. I must be honest: getting up in the morning is a lot harder for me during winter. Something about the colder and darker mornings doesn’t motivate me to go for a walk like I usually do in summer. I’ve realized that I tend to sleep in more and schedule my walks for the afternoon instead. Understanding why you do what you do is key. Take a moment to check in with yourself: How do you feel when the seasons change? Do you experience increased fatigue in winter? Do you need more self-care during the holidays because of stress? Or do you experience seasonal blues and need additional support during the colder months? Taking a little time to jot down your symptoms can help you figure out what tweaks you might need to make in your routine or determine if you would benefit from seeking professional help from your healthcare team or a mental health professional.

Coping with seasonal changes is very personal. Change can be difficult and trigger stress, fear, and even anxiety. While some people easily adjust to changes in weather, school schedules, and daylight saving time, others may struggle to adapt, finding that their daily life, health, and emotional well-being are impacted. Practicing mindfulness and self-care can help us adapt and remain flexible. It’s okay to hit the snooze button a few times or choose to stay indoors because the weather is frightful. You can also remain connected to your loved ones through it all. Share how you’re feeling with those around you; chances are they feel the same way. My favorite way to cope with the colder months is with warm soups and stews packed with veggies. A warm meal and a relaxing nighttime routine are all I need to wake up feeling refreshed.

Adjusting to seasonal changes doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By checking in with your body and making small, thoughtful tweaks, you can navigate the ups and downs of the seasons with a bit more ease. Remember, it’s all about finding what works for you and keeping your health a top priority throughout the year.
