Fall-ing In Love

Fall is officially here. It takes some time for our body clocks to reset and adjust to the fewer hours of sunlight and the cooler temperatures. All these changes can bring changes to how we feel physically and mentally and for individuals with MS, seasonal changes can result in flare-ups.  With the change in weather, make sure to incorporate a balanced diet, hydration, regular exercise and adequate sleep into your daily routine. Everyone reacts differently to seasonal changes, so figure out what works for your body and mind by experimenting with different strategies. Here are some ways to enhance your fall experience and make the most of this season:

Sweater weather: Individuals who have MS can be sensitive to colder temperatures especially on the extremities like hands and feet. To avoid this from happening, protect your body by layering up. The beauty of layering is that if it gets cold, you can keep yourself warm with fuzzy socks, lined boots etc. and if it gets warm, you can simply reduce the layers. Drinking hot beverages can also keep your body warm.

Enjoy nature:  It is the best time of the year to capture nature in its finest with the change in foliage colors. Step outside and soak up some sun. As the weather conditions outside constantly fluctuate this season, engage in activities that fit your preferences meanwhile allowing you to stay immersed in the wonders of nature. Time your indoor or outdoor activities to the times of the day that suit your body s needs.

Pumpkin spice and everything nice: It is the time of the year when you can indulge in everything pumpkin. Whether it is spiced latte, donuts, pancake, bread or pie, the possibilities are endless. If you are feeling adventurous, visit a pumpkin patch to socialize and engage in fall activities.

Seasonal foods: Incorporate seasonal fresh produce like apples, sweet potatoes, carrots, pears, cranberries, chard etc. into your diet and get all those good nutrients in. Limiting processed food can be beneficial for managing MS symptoms.

With slight changes to our summer routines, navigating the seasonal changes can be an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Wishing you a fall filled with sunshine, smiles and precious moments!
