How to Manage Your Expectations

As humans, we tend to expect a lot of ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. You may currently be in the process of creating expectations for yourself or you may have already created them. Just remember that it’s important to manage your expectations in a way that’s going to be beneficial to you. We sometimes put these extremely high expectations on ourselves and then get discouraged or stressed when the expectations haven’t been met by the deadline we created.

Here are two very important keys to managing your expectations:

  1. Be patient with yourself.

I know it’s not always fun when you have to exercise your patience but try to remember that being patient is just another part of life’s journey that we are all on. Be patient with yourself as you go to meet expectations. Some expectations you’ll be able to accomplish in a month and some might take a little bit longer, and that’s okay. Remember, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” but eventually it was built.

  1. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Manage expectations against reality

When you are focused on meeting expectations, try not to mentally beat yourself up if you feel you aren’t quite hitting the mark. Remember to stay positive even if things don’t look like they are going in the right direction. Go easy on yourself. You deserve kindness, especially from yourself.

Be encouraged, friend.

It’s okay to have expectations. It’s even okay to have high expectations. You just have to be mindful about making sure you manage your expectations, so that your expectations don’t manage you.

Keep calm and believe you can do it
