We all know a mother or mother-like figure in our life who demonstrates selflessness, resilience, and strength in all that they do. Mothers with multiple sclerosis especially, take on the unique challenge of navigating symptoms and flare ups, while also balancing being a mom.
Overcoming challenges as a mother with multiple sclerosis can be demanding, but also rewarding. It can become a balancing act between self-care and caring for your family, leaning on support, and being adaptable to accommodate flares and symptoms.
With any mother or caregiver, it is important to practice self-care. Listen to your body and mind to know when you may need a break. Remember to continue to incorporate hobbies or activities that you enjoy, even if it is for a few minutes or with your child. Taking care of yourself mentally and physically is not only beneficial to you, but also for your family as well.
Understand when you may need to seek support from family, friends, or a group. It can be hard to ask for help as a mother, especially a new one. However, it can also be empowering to have others build you up and allow reflection for the amazing work as a mother that has been done thus far. New mother or post-partum groups are great ways to get connected with others in your community.
Mothers with multiple sclerosis demonstrate strength and resilience while still providing empathy, compassion and unconditional love. This month let’s celebrate all mothers for their unwavering support and love that they bring to their children, especially those with multiple sclerosis.
