Reclaim Your Power

Being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder comes with many challenges- one of the most common and often more difficult is learning to become your own advocate. More often than not, the people and healthcare professionals I encounter are not familiar with my condition, which frequently means they do not know the symptoms that accompany the diagnosis and the treatment options that work best for me. This is when speaking up for myself becomes vital.

Autoimmune diseases are notoriously tricky. Symptoms can often be invisible and hard to confirm, often being dismissed or inaccurately treated. As someone who has always struggled with people pleasing and appeasing to the emotions of others, it was not always easy to stand up for what I needed or to explain what was occurring within my body. It is with mistakes and time that I realized only I can truthfully and fully speak upon my needs. But where do you begin and how do you become your own advocate? Here are some tips that have helped me throughout my journey:

  • Education is the basis. Do your research and learn all that you can about your specific diagnosis. When you thoroughly understand your condition, you can then communicate effectively with your healthcare provider, recognize potential flares, and compare potential treatment options. There are many reputable sources and disease-specific organizations that can help you with resources and information.
  • Find your compatible medical team. Your relationship with your healthcare provider is an important one. Ensure that you are comfortable with your doctor and have an open space in which you can address your concerns appropriately. It is okay to seek a different provider if you do not feel supported.
  • Speak up for your needs. Don’t be afraid to address your feelings and symptoms and be clear about what it is that you feel you need. This can also pertain to discussing potential lab tests or different medications that you may be interested in.

All in all, your voice matters and you hold the power to advocate for the life you want. There are many resources available, including MSAA, for various educational and supportive materials and programs that are created with you in mind. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, make decisions, and reclaim your control.
