Be an Advocate

Being an advocate means making your voice heard and making it matter. Many people believe they cannot influence the world around them, but advocacy proves otherwise. It allows individuals to speak up about the common challenges people face and to call attention to issues that require change. Advocacy is about creating positive changes and improving lives every day. This is particularly powerful in the world of MS since advocacy can bring about major policy changes and individual empowerment.

At the legislative level, advocacy for MS includes raising public awareness of ongoing issues, connecting with elected officials and pushing for sound policy improvements like lowering costs for FDA approved MS drugs, increased funding for MS research, support for caregivers, etc.

In health care, shared decision making is an essential part of advocating for one’s health, ensuring that individuals work collaboratively with their care team, maintain autonomy, and make informed choices. For people living with MS, this is especially important because the condition varies greatly from person to person. Tailored, case‑by‑case plans empower individuals to manage their disease in ways that best fit their needs.

Honesty with loved ones fosters meaningful conversations and helps others understand the challenges that come with MS. Sharing personal stories — whether in support groups, community meetings, or broader public spaces — builds awareness and strengthens community understanding of MS.

Advocacy at every level is about connection, empowerment, and creating a better world for those living with MS.
