Travelling with MS can be overwhelming, especially if you are travelling to a new destination. Not knowing where the restrooms are or having a place to relax when your legs give way can cause a lot of anxiety for individuals with MS. The unpredictability that comes with MS adds to the stress. Although unexpected hiccups can happen to anyone, planning your itinerary ahead of time will eliminate a great deal of anxiety. Below are some tips to keep in mind when you are planning for a vacation:
- Accessibility maps are typically available on websites for each location. These can be downloaded, and this will help you to locate accessible rest rooms, wheelchair accessible routes, mobility stations etc. If you are unable to access the maps, you can inquire for the same at guest services for each location.
- Apps like Tripadvisor provide lists for wheelchair accessible restaurants, hotels and parks.
- Have a list of all your primary care physicians and neurologists in your contact list for any unexpected emergencies. Also, keep a list of medical facilities that specialize in MS that are close to where you are staying.
- Refill all your prescriptions and place them in your daily or weekly pill boxes. Carry over the counter medications to relieve you from aches and pains from all the exhaustion.
- Unless you need your cooling vest to keep you cool in the plane, it is advisable to put the vest in your checked in luggage. Have a medical note from the doctor that states your need for cooling vests or accessories. Besides the cooling vest, pack other accessories like cooling pillows, neck wrap, wrist wrap, ankle wrap etc. to protect your body from heat during the travel.
- TSA notification cards can inform the TSA officer about your disability and can notify them of any issues that can affect the security screening procedure.
Keep a positive attitude and ask for help when you feel the situation is beyond your control. Do not let MS interfere with your travel plans. A little extra effort on your part will make so much difference to your travel. Let your vacation be a time for you to make memories and rejuvenate and heal from within.
