Learning to Celebrate Myself in the Quiet Moments

By Nicole Robinson

Living with multiple sclerosis has changed the way I look at a lot of things, especially what it means to celebrate myself.

For a long time, I didn’t think of myself as someone who needed to be celebrated. I associated celebration with big milestones, big wins, or moments that everyone could see. But living with a chronic illness has taught me that some of the most meaningful victories are the ones no one else sees.

Self-celebration, for me, doesn’t always look like treating myself or doing something extravagant. Sometimes it looks like getting through a day when my body doesn’t feel its best. Sometimes it’s choosing to rest without guilt. Other times, it’s simply acknowledging that I showed up, even when it wasn’t easy.

I think one of the reasons many of us struggle to celebrate ourselves is because we’re so used to pushing forward. But the truth is, every step forward no matter how small, is worth recognizing.

I give myself grace on the days that don’t go as planned. I acknowledge the strength it takes to navigate the unknown. Those quiet moments of reflection have become my way of honoring myself.

Self-celebration doesn’t have to be seen or validated by others to be meaningful. It starts with recognizing your own worth and giving yourself credit for the things you’ve overcome, the growth you’ve experienced, and the resilience you show every day.

For me, celebrating myself is no longer about waiting for big moments. It’s about embracing the small ones and realizing they matter just as much.
