Speaking Up Is Self Care

Speaking up. Standing up for myself. These are all things that you learn as you grow and mature in life. Advocating for my health though, piece of cake. I know my body like no one else. I understand how my body responds, reacts, and refuses.

When I think of self-advocating for myself, I also think of speaking up not just in the medical sense, but also when something, or someone is not filling my cup. I think back on all of the instances in my younger adult life, and get angry with myself for not speaking up to say “no, my body cannot afford to go out tonight.” Or simply say something along the lines of “I’m sorry you don’t understand why I put my body and my health first, but it’s necessary for me to stay healthy.”

I’m now almost 36, a mother of two, a wife and a SEASONED veteran when it comes to self-advocacy. It’s something you’re forced to learn. MS has been my biggest teacher in life. It had taught me about my body, my mind, and my spirit. On some days, this disease is invisible, but I refuse to be silent.

You need to know that you can only help yourself as long as you’re willing to. Read the doctor’s notes after a visit, ask those questions, even if you think they’re “dumb.” I can promise you that your healthcare provider will be more than happy to answer them. A curious, and engaged patient is something that is valued. If you’re not getting the answers, or attention you want after bringing up an issue, go get a second, third or fourth opinion.

Here’s a photo of me after seven missed IV attempts, and two blown veins. I should have spoken up. That’s all. 🙂

You’re stronger than you think, and smarter than you know. I’m with you. I see you. I celebrate you. Go get ‘em!
