Being Prepared

Individuals living with MS face a lot of uncertainty. Coping with the unpredictability of MS can affect one’s quality of life.  There may be times when you might be going through a relapse or flare up and you may experience MS-related symptoms. It is good to equip yourself to handle such emergencies. Here are some things to keep in mind that will help you to have control over such situations and put your mind at ease:

Emergency information: Have contact information of family, friends, and health care providers whom you can call in the event of an emergency. Keep a list of all medications with their dosages and a copy of your medical history in an accessible area in your home.

Easy meals: Buy frozen food and precut vegetables and fruits. This will help to lessen the time you need to spend preparing your meals when you feel fatigued. Keep nonperishable food among your pantry supplies for days when you have no energy to cook.

Pets: It is a great idea to keep a backup plan for your pets so that they are well taken care of for days when you don’t feel well. Keep a stock of supplies ready for your furry friends for days like these.

Social support: Build your network of support among family, friends, and individuals with MS whom you can lean on for reinforcement and encouragement during difficult times.

MS organizations: If you need assistance with transportation or tasks at home, ask for help. MS organizations like the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation can provide valuable resources and point you in the right direction.

Though life can be challenging with MS, planning ahead for emergencies can make the situation more manageable and help avoid unexpected hiccups. Remember to be kind to yourself and take one day at a time. You got this buddy!
