The Power of Holistic Wellness for Individuals Living with Multiple Sclerosis

By Dr. Eva Jackson

Holistic wellness plays a critical role in improving the quality of life for individuals affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). This approach, recognized and studied by numerous organizations, focuses on treating the whole person rather than addressing symptoms in isolation.

When I was first introduced to life with MS, my care team did not clearly explain the importance of whole-person care. Yet, despite this lack of explanation, that is exactly the model they implemented. Soon after my diagnosis, a comprehensive and coordinated plan was developed to manage my symptoms. My care team included a neuro-ophthalmologist, urologist, MS specialist, sleep medicine specialist, and a physical therapist specializing in multiple sclerosis. At the time, this fast-paced, multidisciplinary approach felt overwhelming. In retrospect, I deeply appreciate how effectively each provider worked together. This coordinated care exemplifies the essence of holistic wellness and addressing physical, emotional, and functional needs simultaneously.

Holistic wellness is especially vital within African American and Hispanic communities, where MS diagnoses are often delayed. A holistic, complementary approach distinct from alternative medicine focuses on nurturing the mind, body, and spirit alongside traditional medical treatment. This integrated care model supports acceptance, understanding, and resilience in the face of the many challenges individuals with MS experience.

Holistic wellness is not about replacing medical care; it enhances it by treating the whole person. To better understand its impact, it is important to explore each component of the holistic wellness experience. While medical treatments like disease-modifying therapy and physical therapy are crucial, it’s equally important to adopt healthy lifestyle habits that support your overall well-being.” This links medical care and lifestyle choices more cohesively. Healthy lifestyle habits may include regular exercise tailored to your abilities, a balanced diet, stress management techniques such as mindfulness practices, meditation or yoga, and prioritizing good sleep hygiene.

My personal approach to holistic care

I always welcome conversations about how I live with MS, hoping to help others see that MS isn’t a terminal illness. It often calls for thinking creatively and adapting daily routines. As someone who loves nature, I chose to spend more time outdoors, planting and creating spaces where I can enjoy the natural environment. This not only provided me with exercise and improved my walking strength but also gave me a healthy dose of Vitamin D. Currently, I’m cultivating five different types of basil, three varieties of tomatoes, and a variety of other herbs and vegetables. Although my life changed significantly after being diagnosed with secondary progressive (SPMS). I’ve found joy in growing, creating, and connecting with nature.
