The summer months are chock-full of fun activities, and most of these activities are outside. For those living with MS, being outdoors for an extended period of time can be taxing on both the body and mind. I have a list of things that I do in the summer months to stay calm, COOL, and collected when being outdoors, so I too can enjoy these fun activities with everyone else.
- Buy a bottle that is functional and easy to carry. My husband jokes that I have enough water bottles to use a different one every day of the year. He may be right (shh, don’t tell him I said that). For me, having a water bottle that I like makes all the difference. The ones that work best for me are bottles that have a lid, a durable handle, and a straw.
- Fresh fruit. I keep all kinds of different fruits chopped up and ready to eat in the fridge or freezer. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE watermelon. I keep these handy to also hydrate, as well as being super yummy!
- Keeping it cool! When going to the beach, I clean washcloths that I put in water, then freeze them in the cooler. If I feel overheated, I put these on my chest, neck, and forehead. I got this idea from my toddler who is teething. 😉 Mom hack.
- Shade is your friend! Bring an umbrella or even use a towel or blanket, if you’re in a pinch. It works, and your body will thank you.
- Be wise. You know your body best. If you feel hot, take a break. I like to let people know when I am making plans that earlier in the morning, or later in the evening works best for me since it is not as hot or sunny during those times. Don’t be afraid to let those around you know your limits.
- Wear very comfortable and breathable clothing. Sundresses are always my go-to.
The summer months can be a hard time for most of us living with MS who want to make the most of the summer with our families, but please remember that your health always comes first. Staying cool is cool! Enjoy these activities in comfort and be wise. Listen to your body. I hope you have a wonderful summer!
