I always considered myself a planner. I constantly made lists; I carefully thought out decisions, big or small, to get to the most optimal outcome. I loved comparing the pros and cons of possibilities for things to come. Though I have to say since having kids, the planner in me has changed a bit. I still try to plan and prepare the best that I can, but I’ve had to come to the very real fact that plans change – no matter how much you prepare otherwise.
There are certain things that I’ve learned about making plans and setting goals that have been helpful over the years. The first is to be flexible and patient; two concepts that can be difficult to embrace. However, knowing that plans can change or shift unpredictably, even with the best intentions, is important to realize. It may make things easier to accept if they do change. The saying goes, “the best laid plans…” This is true, even with the most careful of planning.
When it comes to goal setting, it can also help to start with smaller goals that can eventually lead to greater ones. Meeting small goals at a time can create great satisfaction and lead to the confidence and work to set larger ones. Have patience and be kind to yourself when making plans and goals – don’t set yourself up for loss. If you know you won’t be able to see a particular goal through, wait to set it until you can – or make a different, more attainable one first. Do not create unnecessary disappointment in yourself. It’s important to make plans and set goals on your own terms. Keep in mind that no plan or goal is ever too small to make a difference.
