Stay Active and Keep Your Cool

As the summer heat continues to rise, staying active can be challenging, especially for those managing a chronic health condition like multiple sclerosis (MS). Personally, this summer has felt particularly hot. While staying active is crucial for our health, how can one exercise and keep moving when all they want to do is stay indoors and lie down in front of the fan? Here are some tips to help you remain active and thrive during the summer months:

  • Dress the part: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that allows sweat to evaporate and keep you cool. Light-colored fabrics reflect sunlight, helping you stay comfortable during outdoor activities. Consider using cooling products to mitigate the negative effects of heat and humidity.
  • Time matters: Beat the heat by exercising during cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings. This not only reduces your exposure to high temperatures but also makes your workout more enjoyable.
  • The importance of water: Proper hydration is essential, especially when it’s hot outside. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and take a water bottle with you during workouts to stay hydrated. You can freeze a half-filled plastic water bottle and fill the rest with water. The half-frozen bottle will remain cold longer and can be used to cool down by applying it to quick-cooling spots (like hands, wrists, feet, ankles, and underarms), where blood vessels are close to the skin’s surface.
  • Exercise indoors: Explore indoor activities like yoga, aerobics, or walking at a local indoor mall. Take advantage of public spaces with air conditioning. Window shopping can even count as exercise! Many exercises that can be done at home as well; MSAA’s Equipment Distribution Program offers exercise equipment including an exercise peddler, a yoga mat, and resistance bands for staying active indoors. For those with mobility concerns, consider stretching while lying down or chair-based exercises. Working On Wellness Foundation provides free chair-based exercise sessions and community support for motivation within the MS community.
  •  Set achievable goals: Our health and exercise needs vary, so find activities that fit your lifestyle and health requirements. The most effective exercise routine is one that meets your needs and is enjoyable. Listen to your body during physical activity, taking breaks as needed to avoid heat exhaustion.

Staying active doesn’t always require a gym membership or elaborate routines; sometimes, it’s as simple as incorporating movement into daily tasks. While summer offers outdoor enjoyment, staying active indoors has never been easier. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise regimen, particularly in hot weather. Stay safe, stay active, and make the most of this summer season!
