It’s that time of year again— the peak of the summer months is upon us. For those living with MS affected by the heat, staying cool becomes top priority. And for individuals on a budget, summer planning can require some creativity and thinking outside of the box. But there are ways to try and enjoy the season while being cost efficient and budget savvy. It’s about finding what works for you!
Movie night…or day
Whether it’s finding something on a streaming service, a good old-fashioned DVD, or watching something by way of a movie projector—catching a flick can be fun and inexpensive. Watching films indoors during hot summer days or venturing outside on cooler summer nights for a movie excursion is a great way to spend the days of the season, without spending all of your money. Pair this with things like make your own ice cream sundaes, campouts, binge-a-thons, and games to help round out fun summer days and nights!
Community activities
There may be events and programs in your area that you can partake in that won’t break the bank this summer. Check newsletters, emails, community event pages, and other local sources of information for scheduled programs of which some may be free or low cost. There may also be local museums, parks, zoos or other facilities in your community that have no/low/reduced fees or special rates for services. Keep an eye out for fairs, music events, markets or other local fare that may be low cost too. Something fun and inexpensive may be right around the corner!
Get crafty with hobbies
Summer can be a great time to start or restart hobbies that you haven’t had the time for. While trying to keep cool during this time of year, you can begin that craft project you’ve put off, or start reading the book you’ve had for a while, or decorate that space in your home that’s longed for some attention. Finding time to write, draw, paint, photograph, or create something special can all be wonderful ways to spend the summertime without draining all of your resources.
While summer can be a challenging time for heat sensitivity, it can also be a time of enjoyment, creativity, and discovering new things. Be sure to stay cool and hydrated during the season and let yourself find some cost-effective fun along the way!
